Step-by-Step Creation Method
Source a wide, heavy ceramic or resin planter measuring 18 to 22 inches in diameter with built-in drainage holes, filling it to within 4 inches of the rim with nutrient-rich potting mix. Plant a tall purple fountain grass stem directly in the back-center of the container to serve as your central vertical “thriller.” Surround the grass base with three to four medium-height “filler” plants—such as bright pink petunias and yellow lantana—spacing them evenly to build a full, rounded middle layer. Plant two chartreuse sweet potato vines and two white trailing bacopa starts along the front and side rims to serve as cascading “spillers.” Pack additional potting mix firmly around all root balls, leaving an inch of space below the top rim for easy watering. Place the completed planter in a full-sun porch location, watering deeply daily during peak summer temperatures.
