Step-by-Step Creation Method
Select a wide, shallow terracotta bowl or dark bronze metal planter measuring 16 to 20 inches in diameter with clear bottom drainage. Fill the container halfway with standard potting soil, leaving ample room to insert established fall nursery plants. Place a large, blooming orange or burgundy chrysanthemum plant in the back-center section of the container. Nest small ruffled purple ornamental kale plants and short fountain grass clumps on either side of the central chrysanthemum. Place two to three small, hard-skinned decorative heirloom pumpkins or ghost gourds directly onto open soil spaces near the front rim. Water the arrangement deeply at the soil level, avoiding direct overhead watering on chrysanthemum petals to extend bloom life throughout autumn.
