An architectural tray combining a rigid, laser-cut or round pine wood base with vertical coiled cotton rope sides, ideal for keys, mail, and sunglasses on entryway consoles.

Step-by-Step DIY Execution Guide

  • Cut a 9-inch round base from 0.5-inch pine or birch plywood (or use a pre-cut wooden craft round). Sand edges smooth and apply a natural matte sealant.

  • Drill 1/8-inch holes spaced 0.5 inches apart around the perimeter, 0.25 inches from the outer edge.

  • Take a length of 1/4-inch cotton rope. Using a large tapestry needle and waxed linen cord, whip-stitch the first row of rope directly through the drilled holes around the wood rim.

  • Once the anchor coil is fastened to the wood, coil additional rope layers upward using high-temp hot glue or hand whip-stitching.

  • Build 4 vertical rows to create a shallow 2-inch lip.

  • Taper the rope end flush and finish with a decorative brass rivet or leather tab over the seam.
